There was no impact. Forcing his eyes open, Stephen realized Cutter had caught him. Breath stuttering, Stephen said, “I’m sorry.”
“I watched you die,” Nick said thickly. “All I’ve thought about is how much I wanted a second chance. Don’t apologize.”
“Never should’ve happened,” he slurred, blinking furiously as darkness surrounded him. Confused, he tilted his head. “What happened?”
Cutter’s face was stark and he shifted, lifting one hand and blanching. It was covered with blood. “Stephen...”
Stephen looked down, surprised. In his rush to meet the deadline, he hadn’t noticed the blood.
He hadn’t noticed that he’d been shot.
