Well, you sound like you have enough grasp to be able to jump in. All I knew was that the Doctor was a Time Lord, going through time to make things right/better. Along his journey, he ended up with various companions.
Amy and Rory are the 11th Doctor's companions (right after David Tennant's doctor regenerates into Matt Smith). Actually, it starts off as just Amy but eventually includes Rory after a whole mess of things. And together, they're all basically awesome.
But mostly you just need to know about the traveling through time and different solar systems as a backdrop to appreciate a bit of whump :)
