Those eps were a train wreck, which is why they're so hard to rewatch. I am getting some satisfaction out of exploring them from this viewpoint, at least. Because it's so nice to not have Stephen be utterly moronic.
And yeah, it's hard to say who will get it worse in the end -- Billy or Stephen.
