Title:  Weird is a Relative Term

Disclaimer:  Not mine.

A/N:  [livejournal.com profile] eviinsanemonkey  wanted Michael Dorest has weird hobbies.  I’m not sure I made the hobby weird enough but my brain is never sure what’s normal and what’s not.  Also, no beta :)

Summary:  Michael Dorest has weird hobbies.

“It’s not normal,” Billy says.

In the driver’s seat, Michael sighs.  “It’s not abnormal.”

“Yes, actually it is,” Billy protests from the passenger’s seat.  “Things that are not done by a sizable segment of the population are, in fact, considered to be not normal.”

Michael shakes his head.  “You’re overreacting.”

Billy lifts his eyebrows.  “Considering the nature of what you just told me, I actually think my response is rather tame.”

Michael wets his lips, guiding the car through the rush of morning traffic.  “What I mean is that it’s entirely benign.”

“Certainly,” Billy agrees.  “And so are most chins but you don’t see me running around thinking about them in my scarce free time.”  He waves his hand around as if to make his point.

“Oh, that’s right,” Michael says, pouncing on the detail.  “Like you have any room to judge, Mr. I’m-Scared-of-Chins.”

Billy stiffens and his face goes serious.  “Chins are disturbing protrusions on the human face,” he says.  “They serve no inherent function except to injure and terrify.”

“They’re a basic part of our anatomical structure,” Michael counters.

Billy shakes his head, adamant.  “You’re changing the topic.”

“No, I’m just pointing out that you have no room to talk when it comes to a discussion of normal,” Michael tells him, squaring his shoulders in the driver’s seat.

Billy’s eyes narrow.  “It’s possible,” he concedes.  His jaw works for a moment.  “So I guess that means you won’t mind if I let Rick and Casey in on your little secret.”

Michael’s eyes turn to Billy, wide.  “You wouldn’t dare.”

Billy shrugs.  “If it’s totally normal.”

“You’re not playing fair,” Michael protests.

“You’re the one who brought it up,” Billy says in stubborn defiance.

Michael sighs, his spirits deflating.  He can’t help but sulk for a moment as the car advances onward.  “Fine,” he mutters.  “I guess maybe it’s not entirely normal.”

Billy looks expectant.

Michael rolls his eyes.  “I guess it’s really not normal.”

Billy nods his head.  “Not normal to...?” he prompts.

Michael glares at him in earnest.  “I guess it’s not normal to know the title and plot to every Star Trek episodes ever filmed,” he says.

Billy seems satisfied.  “There,” he says.  “You know, they say that admission is the first step for recovery.”

“I still say it’s not that weird,” Michael says.  “If it wasn’t a popular show, then how did it have so many spinoffs?”

“I think the fact that you can list the guest stars and offer quotes in a number of nonexistent languages is part of the problem,” Billy suggests.

“But it has a large fan base,” he says.  “It’s spanned generations.”

“It has an avid fan base,” Billy corrects.  “There’s a difference.”

Michael can’t think of a reply.  He sits sullenly in his seat as the traffic hums along.

“Besides,” Billy continues with a shrug.  “It’s not even high quality storytelling.  I mean, it'd be entirely different if we were talking Dr. Who or something really brilliant.”

Michael turns to look at Billy again.

Billy shrugs.  “What?”

Michael shakes his head.  “And you think I have weird hobbies,” he mutters as he continues to drive them to work.
